NONAM in Zurich

The sound chamber inside the NONAM constitutes an extension of the museum concept.
The permanent and temporary collections of the "North American Native Museum" document the history of the "First Nations" by means of texts, images and exhibited objects.
Inside the sound chamber, visitors have the possibility of getting to know on an acoustic level the contemporary environment of some of these peoples.

The cultural anthropologist Hein Schoer has documented the birth and construction of an Inuit-soundscape within the context of his doctoral thesis at the University of Maastricht. The attendance of this sound chamber entailed the development of a pedagogic museum project: "The Sounding Museum".
